CAPE TOWN - The suicide of Peter Williams was a shocking reminder of the human cost of gambling but experts have blamed the casinos, saying casinos do little to help the addicts who fill their coffers.

Williams burnt himself to death at Montecasino in July.

According to reports, by torching his body, Williams also set fire to the idea that gambling is an escape from pain.

Gambling-related suicides are rife in South Africa.

According to the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, the industry-funded body for addiction treatment and prevention, about 22 percent of problem gamblers have attempted suicide and 52 percent are thinking of suicide by the time they seek help.
