Religious leaders back Gordhan in open letter
Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba says the leaders have given their full backing to the finance minister.
In an open letter to Gordhan, Makgoba applauds the minister for the good work he and his team have done in trying to stabilise the economy despite a rash of challenges.
"We thank you for your hard work and dedication and your willingness even to put your life on the line in order to protect the gains of the struggle and to enhance the quality of the lives of our people."
The cleric says Gordhan enjoys the support of most South Africans.
"I am confident that religious leaders of all faiths speak on behalf of millions of their followers when we reassure you that our people are praying for you and that the vast majority of South Africans are behind you."
Last week, the National Religious Leaders Council raised concerns about how the Hawks have treated Gordhan.
"We would like to strongly warn those who want to raid the institutions and destabilise this country not to push the people of South Africa too far," the council's Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein said.
