CAPE TOWN - Three more suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of Northern Cape Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Hannes Baatjies.

Baatjies was shot and killed hours before he was to be sworn in following the local government elections last month.

His associate, who was wounded in the incident, died six days later in hospital.

Zonisele Magawu, 29, has already been charged in connection with the murders.

The Hawks' Philane Nkwalase says the trio, aged 33, 39 and 49, have been charged with the murders of Baatjies and his business partner, Shuping Nose.

"Three suspects were arrested on Tuesday; they've appeared in court and the matter has been postponed until 22 September."

One of the accused, Charles Mpondomisa, will reportedly be joining Magawu in the dock today for a separate case of alleged house robbery in which firearms were stolen late last year.

It remains unknown whether the stolen weapons were used in the attack on Baatjies and Nose.

The business partners were apparently lured to a bogus meeting the night Baatjies was killed.
