Nair’s case went on for too long - Mashaba
The Pikitup board has terminated the contract of its MD, Amanda Nair, after months of protests against her.
Mashaba was speaking about the illegal land invasions in the City, which he believes are a tactic by the African National Congress to derail the newly appointed Democratic Alliance administration.
The mayor also received a memorandum shortly after the briefing in Johannesburg from the Congress for South African Trade Unions, Boycott Divestment and Sanctions South Africa and the South African Communist Party, with a list of demands including concerns about potentially privatising Pikitup.
The group marched to Mashaba's office to hand over a memorandum of demands including socio-economic transformation and a plan for housing.
Cosatu's Mathebula Mike says: "We are in support of this march. Away with privatisation, down with labour brokering and forward with the workers."
Mashaba however has confirmed that Nair's contract has been terminated after months of protests calling for her to be fired.
"Unfortunately the case of Amanda Nair has been going on for just too long, and it's unfortunate that it's been holding [back] the delivery of services to our people."
He says the decision is a step in right direction.
