CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has labelled President Jacob Zuma a puppet of the Gupta family.

Members of Parliament (MPs) earlier debated a call by the opposition for a parliamentary inquiry into state capture and the undue influence of certain individuals over government decisions.

The DA wanted a special committee established to investigate allegations that the Gupta family has the power to decide Cabinet appointments and the use of state resources.

Maimane said Zuma didn't invent state capture but has perfected it, deploying loyalists to every lever of power and patronage

He said the Gupta family has captured Zuma.

"We no longer have a president in South Africa, we have a puppet. Jacob Zuma is a puppet of the Guptas."

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) backed the DA's call for a parliamentary inquiry into state capture.

The party's Fana Mokoena says, "It's a sad day that the whole Parliament has to sit here discussing one corrupt and immoral family. We have to do so because we know, as a fact, that this family has business interests in government business."

The African National Congress (ANC) has hit back with the party's Joan Fubbs citing corporate capture by private sector demagogues as a threat to the development of a people's democracy.
