CAPE TOWN - A Piketberg community leader says a 12-year-old girl is lucky to be alive after she was mauled by a bull terrier.

The girl sustained wounds to her legs, arm and stomach when she was bitten by the dog in Eendekuil near Piketberg over the weekend.

She's been discharged from hospital.

Eendekuil community leader Billy Claasen has called for the dog to be put down.

"The girl is lucky to be alive. The dog was hit with sticks and stones to get it off her. It's not the first this particular dog has been involved in such an attack."

Over the past few weeks there have been several fatal dog attacks on children in the Western Cape.
