Mashatile expresses disappointment after RDP houses vandalised
At least 100 RDP houses were either torched or vandalised by some residents in Krugersdorp.
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Paul Mashatile says he's disappointed at those who vandalised RDP houses in Kagiso Extension 13 in Krugersdorp, adding the damage will only delay the allocation process and badly affect the allocated budget.
At least 100 RDP houses were either torched or vandalised after some residents attempted to occupy a vacant piece of land in the area.
Gauteng police say the group damaged at least 100 RDP houses by torching them or breaking windows.
The department's Keith Khoza says beneficiaries will now have to spend more time in shacks, as the department assesses the damages and costs to repair the houses.
"Remember, when we build RDP houses there are fixed grants, which does not make provision for possible vandalism. This is impacting negatively on us to provide houses."
