South Africans urged to support National Book Week
A box has been designated for donations at selected book stores.
CAPE TOWN - South Africans have been urged to take part in National Book Week this week by simply buying a book.
The initiative forms part of the South African Book Development council's attempt to promote reading - especially among children.
The organisation's Elitha van der Sandt says that according to a 2007 study, only 14 percent of South Africans are active readers.
"More than half of South Africans do not have a single leisure book within their households. We have negotiated with our industry so that we can go into Exclusive Books, Bargain Books and Takealot and buy selected titles at only R20 and drop it in the donation bin."
