JOHANNESBURG - You might think that Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte's description of US President Barack Obama as a "son of a bitch" was the most vulgar thing to come out of Duterte's mouth, right? Wrong!

Eyewitness News takes you through some of the most vulgar and controversial things the Filipino president has said.

Duterte won the presidency in May as he promised to suppress crime and wipe out drugs and drug dealers, and a wave of extrajudicial killings has followed.

In May, he called Pope Francis a "son of a whore", and called US Ambassador Philip Goldberg a "gay son of a whore."

"The campaign against drugs will continue until the drug manufacturer is killed and I don't give a shit about anybody observing my behaviour."

In April he made jokes about the 1989 rape and murder of an Australian missionary that took place in Davao City.

"I was mad she was raped but she was so beautiful. I thought, the mayor should have been first. What a waste."

In 2015 when Pope Francis visited the Philippines Duterte was stuck in traffic because of the visit and he cussed the pope.

"Pope, son of a whore, go home. Do not visit us again."

"Forget the laws on human rights. If I make it to the presidential palace, I will do just what I did as mayor. You drug pushers, hold-up men and do-nothings, you better go out. Because I'd kill you," he said at his final campaign rally in Manila, referring to his record after 22 years as mayor of Davao.

Unlike traditional politicians, Duterte is known for his outspoken anticlerical views, opposing the strong influence of the Church and its clergy.
