Beaufort West cell death: Accused still waiting for psych evaluation

CAPE TOWN - The man accused of killing and cannabilising an 18-year-old man in a police holding cell in Beaufort West is still waiting to be admitted to the Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.

Murder accused Zuko Mgungquntu made an appearance in the Beaufort West Magistrates Court yesterday where the matter was postponed until 6 October.

Gerdo Karelse's body was found in the cell he had shared with the accused in June.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, murder accused Mgungqguntu is 103rd on the waiting list for a bed at the Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.

He faces charges of murder and malicious damage to property. Karelse's body had severe facial wounds.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has found that the warrant officer on duty at the time of the incident, lied about details surrounding the 18-year-old's death.
