CAPE TOWN - Police suspect a George mother accused of murdering her adult drug addict son may be shielding a suspect.

The woman was arrested last month for allegedly stabbing to death her son, who had apparently tried to rob her.

She was granted bail last week.

The police's Malcolm Pojie says investigations have revealed the 44-year-old woman may not have killed her son.

"We believe the mother may not have been responsible for the murder but she is covering for someone else."

Pojie says she could now be facing a charge of obstruction of justice should it be found she was lying to investigators.

The woman appeared in court last week and was released on bail of R300.

Her case has been postponed to the fourth of October.
