Beaufort West cell murder case postponed

CAPE TOWN - The case against a man accused of killing and cannibalising an 18-year-old in a Beaufort West holding cell has been postponed until October.

Gerdo Karelse was found dead at the Beaufort West Police Station in June.

Zuko Mguqguthu, who was sharing a cell with him, is charged with his murder.

Murder accused Mguqguthu has been ordered to undergo mental observation at the Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.

However he is number 103 on the waiting list.

The accused faces murder and malicious damage to property charges.

Karelse's body was found with wounds to his face.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has found a warrant officer on duty at the time of the incident, lied about details surrounding the 18 year old's death.
