CAPE TOWN - Seven Western Cape policing precincts are among 10 classified as murder hot spots.

This was revealed by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko during a media briefing on crime statistics for the 2015/16 financial year.

Overall there were 18,673 murders countrywide in the year in review.

Nyanga, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein and Delft are among the police stations which contributed the most to the national murder rate.

Nhleko says this is concerning.

"The generation of murders, particularly in the Western Cape accounting for 2.3 percent of the national murder counts and 13.4 percent of those in the province."

Bethelsdorp in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has also joined this list this year due to prevalence in gang-related killings.
