JOHANNESBURG - The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says should the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg decide to privatise Pikitup, it will be forced to take the necessary steps to have Herman Mashaba removed as mayor.

The EFF says it believes Mashaba should focus on other pressing matters that affect poor people and not privatise Pikitup.

This follows reports that Mashaba plans to privatise the waste removal company.

However, the DA says it has not taken any steps to do so.

The EFF's Johannesburg chairperson Musa Novela says the party will oppose efforts to privatise Pikitup should the plans be legitimate.

"They speak of privatising it; we need to capacitate it and hire the best of the best people to do the job."

Novela has emphasised that the EFF is not in a coalition with the DA and will take the necessary steps to remove newly elected Mayor Mashaba should the privatisation plans go through.

"It's not even a difficult process because we have no contractual agreement with anybody."

However, in a statement Mashaba says no steps that have been taken to privatise the waste removal company.

He adds all consultation will be done so transparently and will include trade unions.
