CAPE TOWN - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has expressed gratitude to everyone who has sent him well wishes during his latest stay in hospital.

The Arch is being treated for a recurring infection and is expected to remain in hospital for another week or two.

His family says he has responded well to the first 48 hours of treatment.

Yesterday Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille visited him in hospital.

De Lille says it was good to see him laughing. "He is a pillar of hope for our country and we know he is a very strong person. He appreciates all our prayers and well wishes. We wish him all the best and that he'll be going home soon."
