CAPE TOWN - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu's family says he has responded well to the first 48 hours of treatment for a recurring infection.

A statement indicates the treatment is ongoing.

The family statement says Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu remains very conscious of how fortunate he is to be able to receive first-class treatment not available to most South Africans.

Earlier, Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille paid him a visit in hospital.

"He's doing fine. He just said a prayer for me and the country and he is in good hands."

The Arch's daughter, Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe, says her father has expressed his gratitude to everyone for their prayers and well wishes.
