CAPE TOWN - Road deaths have increased over weekends in the Western Cape.

This emerged at a road safety workshop hosted by the Western Cape Transport and Public works department in Cape Town today.

Annual spikes in road fatalities vary in different parts of the province.

Provincial Transport and Public Works' Elliot Hector says there are regional variations in road fatalities.

"The real biggest problem, and this seems to hold true in the entire province, is on a Saturday night."

But he says there is one trend that rings true for the entire province.

Hector stresses the Western Cape must urgently address the issue of pedestrians under the influence, which he says is the province's biggest road safety concern.
