JOHANNESBURG - Former South African Revenue Service Commissioner (Sars), Oupa Magashula has confirmed to Eyewitness News that he has also now given a statement under legal warning to the Hawks.

Earlier today, former Sars deputy commissioner Ivan Pillay and the former head of a special unit Johann van Loggerenberg gave similar statements under warning, but Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has refused to comply with the demands of the Hawks.

The Presidency denied that President Jacob Zuma was involved in a dispute with Gordhan, and that he's using the Hawks to put pressure on him.

Magashula won't say much about his meeting with the Hawks.

He would only confirm two things - that he did have to make a warning statement to the Hawks, and that it was what he called a brief interview.

However it's not clear what information he could give to investigators.

It's not clear what the Hawks would want from Magashula, and what his involvement may have been in the creation of this controversial unit at Sars.

Magashula took over as commissioner of the revenue service after this unit had already been created in 2009, before he left Sars in 2013.
