CAPE TOWN - The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) says there has been an improvement in infrastructure at the Pollsmoor prison.

The body, however, has raised concerns around overcrowding.

Yesterday, opposition Members of Parliament in Parliament's select committee on security and justice rubbished the Western Cape Correctional Servies Department's intervention plans, calling for a more workable solution.

The JICS says issues at Pollsmoor prison have been identified and efforts to address them are being implemented.

Acting CEO of the oversight body Umesh Raga says overcrowding at Pollsmoor and other prisons requires a national intervention.

"Problem still though is, the place is overcrowded and meeting those demands is not just a Pollsmoor matter as we've expressed before. It is a larger problem with regard to getting those numbers down."

The provincial correctional services department says it is implementing an intervention plan to curb the negative effects of overcrowding at Pollsmoor prison.
