DA calls for an urgent debate on 'witch-hunt' against Gordhan
Mmusi Maimane has written to Speaker Baleka Mbete requesting the debate be scheduled as soon as possible.
CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for an urgent debate of national importance on what it describes as a witch-hunt against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan instigated by President Jacob Zuma.
DA leader Mmusi Maimane has written to Speaker Baleka Mbete requesting the debate be scheduled as soon as possible.
Maimane says the battle between Gordhan and Zuma heralds an economic disaster which will hurt all South Africans.
He's asked Mbete to allow the National Assembly to urgently debate what he says can only be described as an attempt by Zuma to capture the National Treasury.
Gordhan's declined a request by the Hawks to present himself to them in connection with their probe into an alleged covert Sars unit, saying he has no legal obligation to do so.
News of the summons has shocked investors and the financial sector, causing stocks to fall and the rand to weaken.
