CAPE TOWN - The business associate of a slain Northern Cape Democratic Alliance councillor has succumbed to his injuries.

Hours before he had to be sworn in as a DA councillor in Kgatelopele Municipality, Hannes Baatjies was lured into a bogus business meeting.

It's understood he had asked the business associate to accompany him.

While Baatjies was found dead near his car in Groenwater, his partner was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said, "We can confirm that we received the unfortunate news of the passing away of the associate. The victim died last night."

Mulaudzi has called on the public to come forward with any information that could assist the investigation.

An African National Congress (ANC) councillor candidate Zinosele Magawu will now face two murder charges.

The ANC councillor candidate, who lost his ward in the local government elections, appeared in the Postmasburg court earlier this week and is expected back in court on Monday.

At the same time, Hawks investigators maintain more arrests are imminent in the case.
