JOHANNESBURG - Police are monitoring an ongoing protest in Mamelodi where a group of residents are challenging this morning's evictions.

Earlier, police removed residents who illegally occupied RDP houses in Nellmapius after the city obtained a court interdict when some occupants refused to leave.

By Sunday, residents had managed to occupy nearly 2,000 houses

It's understood some residents did so in response to the announcement of the Democratic Alliance's Solly Msimanga as the new mayor of the city.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said, "It seems they are not happy with that decision so they are going around Mamelodi blockading some streets and burning tyres. As metro police in the city, we are monitoring the situation."
