Hundreds of fans welcome home Team SA, athletes score excellence awards
Team SA arrives home with a record ten medals including two gold medals.
JOHANNESBURG - Hundreds of fans gathered at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday morning to welcome home Team South Africa returning from the Rio 2016 Olympics Games.
The team arrived home with a record ten medals, including two gold from Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya.
Some fans had flags wrapped around their shoulders, with others holding banners labelling the athletes as heroes.
There was a DJ playing in the arrivals hall as fans, fighting the cold, sang and danced to stay warm.
South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) officials at the airport said these athletes deserve this hero's welcome after their historic showing in Rio which saw them finish with ten Olympic medals.
Sascoc president Gideon Sam thanked all South Africans, especially those gathered at OR Tambo, for supporting the country's athletes while competing at the Rio Olympics.
"I know that South Africans like winners, if you're a loser, South Africans will dump you on the spot. So thank you very much for coming out like this South Africa because this is what the athletes would like to see and know that they're supported."
