ANC retains speaker in Ekurhuleni City Council
The ANC has won the first round of voting, with Patricia Khumalo retaining her position as council speaker.
JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) has won the first round of elections in the Ekurhuleni city council meeting, with former speaker of council Patricia Khumalo retaining her position.
Khumalo beat the Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Shabangu by 117 votes to 106.
With 224 ballots cast for the position of speaker, the Independent Electoral Commission announced the vote was free and fair.
"The process was free and fair, and I hope even the party agents will attest to the fact that everything was transparent."

ANC councillors celebrated after results were announced, while Economic Freedom Fighters and DA councillors sat quietly in their seats.
