CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) in the Northern Cape says it's shocked by the arrest of a party official in connection with the murder of a Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor.

Hannes Baatjies was shot dead and his business partner wounded earlier this month.

The Northern Cape ANC's Naledi Gaosekwe says the arrest of ward one candidate Zonisele Magawu on Friday has shocked the party.

"We are calling on the community to remain calm and allow for the court processes to unfold."

The Hawks' Hangwani Mulaudzi says the 29-year-old appeared briefly in the Postmasburg Magistrates Court on Monday.

"This case has been postponed to 29 August for further investigation."

Mulaudzi says Baatjies and his business associate were apparently lured to a bogus business meeting on the night they were shot.

The motive for the attack is still unclear.
