Man who allegedly shot & killed DA councillor due in court
The 29-year-old suspect, who was arrested on Friday, is facing murder and attempted murder charges.
CAPE TOWN - A 29-year-old man is expected to appear in the Postmasburg Magistrates Court today in connection with the murder of Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Hannes Baatjies.
Baatjies was reportedly lured to what he believed was a business meeting where he was shot and killed.
The Hawks say more arrests are imminent.
Baatjies, 49, was found dead near his car in Groenwater in the Northern Cape, just hours before he was due to be sworn in as a DA councillor last week.
The suspect, who was arrested on Friday, is facing murder and attempted murder charges.
Baatjies' business partner accompanied him to the meeting and was also shot. He remains in a critical condition in hospital.
The Hawks' Hangwani Mulaudzi says officials are working around the clock to ensure all the perpetrators are caught.
Mulaudzi adds evidence indicates the 29-year-old suspect may have been involved in several armed robberies.
