Oiled penguins rescued in PE after oil spill

Several penguins were rescued after an oil spill in Port Elizabeth at the weekend.

CAPE TOWN - Nearly 50 penguins have been rescued following an oil spill in Port Elizabeth.

The National Sea Rescue Institute(NSRI) assisted South African National Parks officials and Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds in locating the oiled animals.

The NSRI's Craig Lambinon says: "Penguins along the coast of Port Elizabeth appeared to have been oiled over the past week. The South African Maritime Safety Authority is investigating the spill that is believed to have come from a ship-to-ship transfer, which caused some of the penguins to be oiled."

The South African Maritime Safety Authority is investigating the cause of the leak.

It's has appealed to the public to drop off towels and newspapers at their offices in Cape St Francis to clean the oiled penguins.
