JOHANNESBURG - President Jacob Zuma has instructed Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande to find the money to accommodate the zero percent fee increase for university students next year.

The City Press is reporting that Zuma gave the instruction to the two ministers despite Treasury and Nzimande warning that a no fee increase will be unsustainable.

According to the City Press, Zuma called a meeting with both Gordhan and Nzimande in Pretoria last week Sunday.

Zuma apparently made it clear that he backed the call for a zero percent fee tertiary education by the progressive youth alliance.

At the commission of enquiry into Higher Education and Training earlier this month, the Council on Higher Education recommended an across the board inflation-related increase at universities in 2017.

While National Treasury told the commission that it's not willing to borrow money to fund Higher Education as its resources are currently under strain.
