ANC mum over ANCYL's call for early leadership elections

Yesterday, the league said the ANC needed to hold an elective conference early.

JOHANNESBURG - There's no official reaction yet from the African National Congress (ANC) to the call by the ANC Youth League for the party to hold an early leadership election.

Yesterday, the league said the ANC needed to hold an elective conference early and that that conference shouldn't be contested to prevent the party from being divided.

The league says it's making the call because the results of the local government elections shows the ANC has very little time to regenerate before the 2019 polls.

The ANCYL has been seen as close to a group of premiers believed to be positioning themselves to influence the next ANC leadership election.

Political analyst Somadoda Fikeni says this move suggests the so-called "Premier League" believes they are ready to start that contest.

"They would then think they're ready now more than any other competitor or potential competitor and they may also have the resources and the infrastructure at this moment."

He also says the ANC's leadership election could make or break the party and decide whether it holds on to power in 2019.
