CAPE TOWN - Police are investigating the murder of Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Hannes Baaitjies, who was found dead near his car in Groenwater, just hours before he was due to be sworn in as councillor.

No arrest have been made following his murder yesterday.

DA leader in the Northern Cape, Andrew Louw, says Baaitjies was a respected figure in the community.

"We were really hoping that we'll see change under his leadership in that community. There have been sworn in as ward councillor and he was also a highlight for us as the opposition because the coalition government would have taken over the municipality in that area."
