Last person seen with slain DA councillor in critical condition
Hannes Baaitjies’s body was discovered hours before he was to be sworn in as a councillor.
CAPE TOWN - Northern Cape police believe a man who was travelling with slain Democratic Alliance (DA) member Hannes Baaitjies is crucial to their investigation.
Baaitjies was found dead with bullet wounds not far from his car between Groenwater and Postmasburg yesterday.
His body was discovered hours before he was to be sworn in as a councillor at the Kgatelopele Municipality.
Police found Baaitjies with bullet wounds to his head and upper body outside his car.
His travelling companion was found in the vehicle's passenger seat, also shot several times.
The police's Masebueng Mochologi says the man is in a critical condition.
"He is actually the last person to been seen with the deceased. For our investigation, he is the sole witness at this stage."
A search party was launched for Baaitjies after he disappeared on Wednesday evening.
Relatives reported he left home after receiving a call from people who said they wanted to see him.
Mochologi says, "No arrests have been made at this stage. Police are working tirelessly to investigate the case and make sure that those who are responsible face the full might of the law."
