JOHANNESBURG - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RMTC) says the assault of a senior traffic officer outside a school in Nigel in Ekurhuleni shows the disregard South Africans have for the men and women in blue.

In a video, which has now gone viral, an unknown man can be seen pushing the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) official to the ground and dragging him while some parents and pupils at the school cheer him on.

The altercation came while the officer was trying to issue the man with a fine.

The suspect has since been arrested and will appear in court soon.

RMTC's Simon Zwane said: "This behaviour is not only unacceptable, it also undermines the dignity of our law enforcement officers. We hope the court will deal with this matter seriously and give this man a punishment that he deserves."
