Chaos, gunshots & terror in N1 traffic rush
Two suspects were wounded and are in a critical condition in hospital.
JOHANNESBURG - A Johannesburg motorist who was caught up in a shootout on the N1 north on Thursday afternoon has described frightening scenes with cars screeching to a halt over the deafening sound of bullets being fired.
On Thursday evening, Police were still combing the crime scene between the Rivonia Road and Buccleuch interchanges where officers and alleged robbers exchanged gunfire.
Two of the suspects were wounded and are in a critical condition in hospital. Two firearms were recovered.
The eyewitness says he initially thought there had been a terrible accident.
"As the traffic started moving slowly again a silver car crashed into the side barrier and, as every other person does, as a peeping Tom, I was looking around at what had happened and an occupant of the car was out of the car and on his stomach."
He says he slowly realised that the loud popping sounds were in fact gunshots.
"The next thing I saw was a police officer standing over him with a rifle, and at that moment I realised it was more than just an accident."
Meanwhile, four lanes on the N1 north near Sunninghill remain closed off this evening.
The police's Kay Makhubela says, "The road is still closed as police are busy on the scene. We will be here for a while to make sure proper investigation is done."
