JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni Metro Police have been left shocked and angry after one of their senior officers was assaulted by an alleged traffic offender in full view of school children and parents.

A video has gone viral showing the metro police officer being pushed to ground and dragged by a man while trying to issue a traffic fine.

The incident happened on Monday outside the Dunnottar Primary School in Nigel, east of Johannesburg.

The police's Clifford Shongwe says, "One of our senior officers noticed a vehicle that was obstructing other vehicles and went out; as he was about to issue a fine the driver starting attacking him."

At the same time, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says it's counting on the courts to make an example of a man who assaulted the traffic official.

The RTMC's Simon Zwane says, "We are extremely perturbed that members of the public are said to have been watching this incident and not intervening; in fact, clapping to encourage these kind of things. This behaviour undermines the dignity of law enforcement officers."

The driver has since been arrested and will appear in court soon.
