RIO DE JANIERO - Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula has told Eyewitness News that the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) needs to do better to ensure Team SA have improved kit after public outcry around the tracksuits they are wearing in Rio.

The tracksuits, supplied by apparel company 361, have caused a storm with many saying they're oversized and ill-fitting.

Mbalula had tweeted that he was unimpressed by the team's look, saying the athletes deserve better.

No swag for team SA at the Olympics. I share same sentiments with all of you. This should never happen again. Our athletes deserve better.

"The company 361 is the main supplier for the Olympics. Look at the design, the people who are serving us here have perfect designs."

Mbalula says South Africans love style and that should be reflected by the team too.

"So what do you want South Africa? Do you want swag or do you want the label? No, we want swag. We want something that when you are in it, you have a six pack like Chad le Clos."

The sports minister says he was impressed by the kit of other nations at the Olympic village.

"I just feel like jumping into France's tracksuit right now. It makes those athletes look exquisite and super."

Many other South Africans shared their thoughts on Twitter:

Looks like an Indian mom bought the SA Olympic team their tracksuits "Don't worry about it being oversized, you'll grow into it"

People can't get over the SA Olympics team "made in China" tracksuits. They are so awful🤕😹

Whoever was hired to design the SA Olympics team tracksuits is walking with a lot of unearned money in they pockets..
