CAPE TOWN - Organisers of the Klein Karoo Klassique say they did not expect so many people to flock to Oudtshoorn for a weekend of classical music.

The event kicked off on Friday as music enthusiasts across the country made their way to the small Karoo town.

The programme included the Grammy and Sama winning flautist Wouter Kellerman, guitarist James Grace and music ranging from baroque to the beatles.

Klein Karoo Klassique's Hugo Theart says it is overwhelming.

"We had an amazing audience, sold out shows and incredible artist so it was a really successful festival."

Theart admits they were almost caught off guard by this year's success.

"One puts out the programme; you select the artists to perform and hope the audience will come."
