Women's shelter struggling to accomodate abuse victims
The NGO says that women are still among the most vulnerable in society.
CAPE TOWN - A local NGO says it is struggling to accommodate abused women and children.
The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children in Manenberg, Cape Town says it has to refer at least 30 women each week to other safe havens as it doesn't have enough space at its own facility.
While South Africa commemorates Women's Day today the centre's director Shaheema Mcleod says women are still among the most vulnerable in society.
"We see scenarios where every woman in South Africa is at risk. We see statistics where 40 percent of South African men have admitted to hitting their partner. Only 3% of perpetrators are being prosecuted. There is something wrong with this picture."
