1 dead, 8 injured in Ekurhuleni grass fire
Authorities say the women had been cutting savanna grass when the blaze broke out earlier today.
JOHANNESBURG - One woman has died and eight others are in a critical condition in hospital after they were caught in a grass fire at a nature reserve in Ekurhuleni.
Authorities say the women had been cutting savanna grass used for thatch roofing when the blaze broke out earlier today.
They apparently tried to outrun the fire but failed.
Emergency services' William Ntladi says the survivors were treated on the scene before being rushed to hospital.
"A number of people who were working inside the nature reserve were burnt. Eight of them are critically injured, while another one was unfortunately declared dead on the scene by the paramedics."
