IEC declares 2016 elections free, fair
The IEC says this year's elections were the hardest since 1994, but they’ve aced it.
JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says the 2016 local government elections have been difficult, but a huge success.
The commission has declared the polls free and fair.
IEC Chief Electoral Officer Mosotho Moepya says: "In this election I'm pleased to indicate that we have at least attained 58%."
IEC Chairperson Glen Mashinini says the commission is satisfied the polls were credible.
The IEC says this year's elections were the hardest since 1994, but they've aced it.
Mashinini says before the elections, there were concerns about the integrity of the electoral commission.
However, the IEC says its research shows the majority of South Africans were happy with the elections.
