CAPE TOWN - World Champion 400m athlete Wayde Van Niekerk says it is a privilege to be South Africa's official flag bearer at the Olympic Games.

Van Niekerk will lead Team South Africa in the Games Traditional Parade of Nations at the Opening Ceremony where all competing countries walk around the iconic Maracanã Stadium.

Because of the Portuguese being the mother tongue in Brazil and the countries file out alphabetically, South Africa will be the third country to march out after the Games progenitor Greece and then Afghanistan.

Van Niekerk says Team South Africa will be a force to be reckoned at the Games.

"That's an extreme honour to me, I'm representing not just myself, but the whole country. I'm carrying the flag for the whole powerhouse team following me."

The Opening Ceremony will commence at 1am tomorrow morning.
