IEC confirms it has received 20 objections
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is in the process of counting the last 5% of the votes.
PRETORIA - As the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) counts the last 5% of the votes it has confirmed that about 20 objections have been received so far.
Objections are complaints received from parties about issues which they believe may materially affect the outcome of the polls.
The African National Congress (ANC) had lodged an objection in Nelson Mandela Bay but this has since been withdrawn.
The IEC's Stuart Murphy says with almost all the counting concluded, fewer than two dozen objections have been lodged.
"The last I heard we were under 20 objections. They are being processed."
He says the counting has slowed down because officials were given some much-needed rest.
"Staff are tired and some have been going for three days without sleep so hopefully with some sleep people will be able to put in the last push and get things done by tonight."
The last remaining votes to be counted are in the country's major metros.
