ANC, DA set their sights on KDF to secure power in Beaufort West

Both parties are in talks with the kingmaker, the KDF, who won just over five percent of the votes.

CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) and Democratic Alliance (DA) have set their sights on the Karoo Democratic Party (KDF) in Beaufort West to secure power in the municipality.

The DA trumped the ANC, who had control over the Beaufort West municipality for the last five years, in this year's elections with a nearly 49 percent majority vote win.

Although the ANC came in at second with 42 percent, it has the same number of seats in council as the DA.

Both parties are in talks with the kingmaker, the KDF, who won just over five percent of the votes.

The DA and the ANC have won six seats each in the Beaufort West municipal council, urging them to look to forming a coalition with the Karoo Democratic Party who has won one seat.

Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille says they are in talks with smaller parties in several areas to form coalitions, including in Beaufort West.

Beaufort West mayor Truman Prince says they are also hoping to secure their top position by partnering with the KDF.

But KDF leader Noel Constable, who says he's pleased with the surprising results, will first discuss their options with the community.

"We will do what we promised the people of Beaufort West. People have given us an opportunity to do that.

"So we must go back to them now and by Sunday we'll ask them to give us a further mandate on what we must do. We will not do it on our own."

The KDF was formed only a few months ago by disgruntled community members who sought a change in the area.
