'Six babies kidnapped from SA state hospitals since 1997'
Sentencing proceedings wrapped up in the Zephany Nurse case today, in the WC High Court.
CAPE TOWN - The Hawks officer who investigated Zephany Nurse's kidnapping says about six babies have been kidnapped from state hospitals in the Western Cape since 1997.
Sentencing proceedings against the woman convicted of kidnapping Zephany in the late 90s wrapped up in the Western Cape High Court today.
The Lavender Hill woman was found guilty of snatching the child from her sleeping mother's arms at Groote Schuur Hospital.
Investigating officer Lieutenant Colonel Mike Barkhuizen says the six babies were abducted from Groote Schuur, Tygerberg, Mitchells Plain, Worcester and Hottentots Holland hospitals.
Barkhuizen says the police service didn't have a specialised unit to deal with such offences at the time when Zephany was snatched.
He adds, these days the required resources are available to deal with such cases.
Barkhuizen goes on to say security measures at state hospitals have also been upgraded over the years. The matter will resume next week.
