PORT ELIZABETH - The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape says it will investigate claims ballot boxes were dumped at a tent in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The marked ballot papers were found in a tent at a local Independent Electoral Commission office in Port Elizabeth.

IEC electoral officer Sy Mamabolo has told reporters the papers found at the results centre in Port Elizabeth were secured and within the custody of officials.

He says they were already captured and procedure requires they also be sent to the local office.

The ANC's leadership at the results in East London did not know about this alleged discovery until a short while ago.

The party's provincial deputy chairperson Sakhumzi Somyo: "Ballot boxes, after any counting, need to be in a secure place wherein all those who were involved were supposed to accompany them to ensure [they are] at a place of safety."
