Vuwani residents choose soccer over voting

More residents have gathered at the Vyeboom soccer grounds than anywhere else in the area.

VUWANI - A group of Vuwani residents have decided not only to boycott today's local government elections, but to play a soccer tournament to show how disinterested they are in the process.

The Limpopo area has been identified as a hotspot following violent protests during which more than 20 schools were damaged or torched.

But so far, things have been peaceful today.

Residents have gathered at the Vyeboom soccer grounds, while others are arriving at some of the 56 voting stations in Vuwani.

Many are clearly boycotting the elections.

Some residents are taking part in a community soccer tournament where there is entertainment provided by those who opted not to vote.

Residents who have not voted say they are protesting the merging of the Vuwani with Malamulele municipalities.
