First municipal election results in
The DA registered 45.45% of the vote, while the ANC garnered 31.82% for ward 6 in the Great Kei in EC.
JOHANNESBURG - The first 2016 municipal election results are in, with all votes for the Great Kei voting district in the Eastern Cape being counted.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced the first results shortly after 9pm.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has taken the most votes in ward 6, registering 45.45 percent of the vote, while the African National Congress (ANC) garnered 31.82 percent.
But the IEC says it's still early days, as more results will start to come in tonight.
The IEC's Sy Mamabolo made the announcement at the national results centre in Pretoria.
"The first results are from ward 6 in the Great Kei."
This is going to be a long night for politicians who are now gathered at the centre to watch as those results trickle in throughout the evening.
Many are waiting to see who will win control of hotly contested metropolitan municipalities such as Johannesburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay.
There were cheers from the ground there at the national results centre as the IEC unveiled the first of its results.
The excitement was mainly from the DA which took the lead the Great Kei municipality.
However, while most of the tallied votes have been in favour of the DA, results on the screen show that nationally the ANC is in the lead.
The night is still young and political party representatives will be watching the screens through the night to see how things develop.
I'M PROUD OF THE DAY, SAYS MAIMANE
While the first set of results has come in, DA leader Mmusi Maimane says it's still a long way to go.
The floor is buzzing with political parties anxiously awaiting more results.
While the EFF did say they are not anxious about the results, Maimane says for his first time leading the party, he is proud of the DA.
"It's been a very positive experience. It's obviously a lot of hard work that you've got to get through and I'm proud of the DA."
