JOHANNESBURG - Fikile Mbalula has urged every South African to go out and vote today, regardless of political affiliations.

The sports minister voted this afternoon at Orange Grove Primary School in the area.

Dressed in his African National Congress colour, Mbalula explained to Eyewitness News why all eligible South Africans have to vote.

"Democracy came at a price and it must be preserved and people must exercise their rights and not take it for granted. It is important."

After voting, the sports minister posed for photographs with residents and Independent Electoral Commission officials.

The queue has steadily grown as the day's gone on, snaking around the school hall were the votes are cast towards the main gate to the top of the premises.
