Mongameli Bobani: DA not serious about racism within its ranks
His criticism of the DA stems from a run-in with Chris Roberts, who referred to him as a baboon.
Bobani's criticism of the party stems from a run-in with DA councillor Chris Roberts, who referred to him as a baboon during a council meeting last year.
Roberts was fined R10,000 by the DA's federal executive as punishment, and he remains a councillor candidate for the party.
Bobani says the DA should have got rid of Roberts.
"I hope the voters around the Nelson Mandela Metro and around the country are going to punish them because this is a country of non-racialism."
But DA leader Mmusi Maimane says the party has dealt appropriately with the complaint against the councillor.
"He knows, even in that sanction that we put forward, if any action he took of a similar nature he would lose his membership immediately."
Maimane, meanwhile, has accused ANC President Jacob Zuma of "spewing the worst kind of racism" during his "divisive" election campaign.
The prevailing rhetoric shows racial politics is a dominant part of the election discourse.
