CAPE TOWN - The Macassar mother who allegedly stabbed her new-born baby in the neck has been sent for a mental health evaluation.

The 33-year-old appeared in the Somerset West Magistrates Court this morning.

She's alleged to have stabbed her baby at the weekend.

The two-day old baby boy is recovering in Tygerberg Hospital after he was stabbed in the neck with a knife.

The woman reportedly wrapped the infant in a blanket before taking him to the Macassar Community Clinic.

Police say she was arrested and has been charged with attempted murder.

But prosecutors are still deliberating on the matter.
