Four IEC officials axed for serious breaches of electoral procedure
The IEC says two presiding officers and their deputies were found in serious breach of the electoral code.
PRETORIA - While the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it's satisfied with special voting over the last two days, its announced the dismissal of four officials for serious breaches of the electoral procedure.
Chief Electoral Officer Mosotho Moepya made the announcement at a briefing at the IEC's results operation centre in Pretoria today.
Moepya says they experienced two incidents where the presiding officers and their deputies were found in serious breach of the electoral code.
"Allowing voters who have not been granted special vote to vote and failing to secure the ballot boxes, they have been summarily dismissed."
He says isolated incidents where the correct procedures were not followed were also reported.
"This included no using double envelope systems and three reported cases of voters who had not applied for special vote but were granted permission to vote."
Despite this, Moepya is confident all the special votes will be completed by this evening.
